What is Sciatica?

A lot of people come into my office saying that they have sciatica. But what really is that?

Sciatica is actually a symptom, and not a full diagnosis.

The sciatic nerve starts in your low back, goes through the buttock and then down the leg. Sciatica indicates that this nerve is being compressed or irritated somewhere along its path.

Sciatica symptoms can be caused by a number of different conditions. It is often used to describe a lumbar radiculopathy, which is a condition that starts in the low back and radiates down the leg. These symptoms often include low back or buttock pain as well as shooting pain, tingling, numbness or weakness down the back of the leg, travelling as far as the foot. The pain is often described as a constant burning or shooting pain that typically affects one leg. You may also experience weakness or numbness in the limb.

It’s important to get sciatica assessed by a health care practitioner so they can determine the exact cause of the symptoms. Determining and treating the cause will exceed the benefits of treating the sciatica symptoms.

If you’re suffering from sciatica and want more information, message me or book an appointment today!
