Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy

The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that provide internal and external rotation of the shoulder. These muscles all originate from the shoulder blade and end at the top of the shoulder.


These muscles include: supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor and subscapularis. When they work together properly, functional rotation and dynamic stability of the shoulder joint is possible.


Rotator cuff tendinopathy occurs very commonly in the general population. It occurs when excessive loads placed on the muscles exceed the muscles healing capacity, resulting in an improper healing process which leads to injury.


Early signs may be pain over the outer shoulder or pain radiating down towards the elbow. Other signs may be pain when reaching overhead or behind the back as well as discomfort with lifting or sleeping on the affected side.


Treatment involves managing the loading of the tendon and progressively restoring muscle strength and coordination to ultimately restore function. This will include rehabilitation exercises, soft tissue therapy as well as mobilizing through the shoulder joint and often times the neck and midback.
